[hub neuron]
also: Hub cells (a term with multiple meanings). Hub neurons found in the developing hippocampus are a subpopulation of GABAergic interneurons possessing widespread axonal arborizations crossing subfield boundaries. They are superconnected and particularly effective in supporting network synchronization. These neurons possess high output functional connectivity. Their stimulation significantly affects network dynamics whereas stimulation of other neurons does not. Hub neurons receive more Excitatory PostSynaptic Potentials and have a lower threshold for action potential generation than other interneurons. Pioneer hub neurons remain into adulthood where they acquire the classical markers of long-range projecting GABA neurons (Bonifazi et al, 2009; Picardo et al, 2011).
