(-1-) Hub cells are a cluster of non-dividing somatic cells surrounded by germline and somatic stem cells at the apical tip of the Drosophila testis (de Cuevas and Matunis, 2011). These cells are derived from a subset of somatic gonadal precursors (SGPs) in the anterior portion of the embryonic gonad. Notch signaling is required for hub cell differentiation, whereas activation of the EGF receptor represses it (Kitadate and Kobayashi, 2010).
