This bioactive fragment of the chicken histone H5 with the sequence VGHNADLQIKLSIRRLLAAGVLKQTKGVGA is an antimicrobial peptide that is active against Listeria monocytogenes and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Its activity is similar to full-length histone, which has been shown to be a potent non-hemolytic broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative planktonic bacteria (MIC range: 1.9 ± 1.8 to 4.9 ± 1.5 µg/mL), including vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Histone H5 also displays anti-biofilm activity against established Listeria monocytogenes and Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilms (Jodoin J and Hincke, 2018).
