Histone H3 is a core component of nucleosomes that compact DNA into chromatin (DeLange and Smith, 1971). Histone H3 constitutes a multigene family of replication-dependent histones that are expressed mainly during S phase and replication-independent histones, or replacement variant histones expressed throughout the cell cycle. There are only slight differences between the encoded proteins (see: Marzluff et al (2002) for overview). Apart from its role in chromatin, Histone H3 has other functions and thus can be regarded as a member of a growing group of proteins referred to as moonlighting proteins.
