This protein is produced by Bacillus cereus, which causes diarrheal and emetic food poisoning syndromes (Schoeni and Wong, 2005). The toxin consists of a component B, which binds to or alters cells, and component L1 and L2, one of which is responsible for cell lysis (Beecher and MacMillan, 1990, 1991). The protein is hemolytic, dermonecrotic, and increases vascular permeability.
