[hairy cell]
These malignant cells are found in the blood of patients with hairy cell leukemia. The cells are named after their microscopic appearance, a characteristic array of irregular cytoplasmic villi on the cell surface. There is evidence that hairy cells are clonal late B-cells in a state of cell activation (Zuzel et al, 2003).
In older references, these cells are called also tricholeukocytes.
