The female oocyte in the primordial ovarian follicle is surrounded by a single layer of follicle cells called granulosa cells (Gougeon, 1996; Zeleznik, 2004; for a discussion on the formation of ovarian follicles see also: Sawyer et al, 2002). Albrecht and Eigler (2001) have provided evidence that granulosa cells and Sertoli cells have a common precursor.
The term mural granulosa cells (abbr. MGC) is used to make a distinction between the granulosa cells at the wall of the Graafian follicle and another functionally distinct subpopulation of granulosa cells that surround the fully-grown oocyte to form a cumulus-oocyte complex (abbr.
