[HIV gp120 binding protein] The gene encoding this protein has been cloned by Curtis et al (1992). gp120 binding protein is a membrane-associated mannose-binding lectin of 404 amino acids that is unrelated to CD4. The protein binds gp120 with high affinity and effects rapid internalization of the viral protein. Binding is inhibited by mannan, D-mannose, and L-fucose. Geijtenbeek et al (2000) have suggested that this binding protein, which does not initiate infection of cells by HIV, nevertheless plays an important role in viral infections. The protein is expressed abundantly on dendritic cells (see also: DC-SIGN) that may have bound the virus in the periphery.
