also: glypican proteoglycan 4. Gene symbol GPC4. Glypican-4 is a cell surface heparan sulfate proteoglycan with a core protein that is anchored to the cytoplasmic membrane via a glycosyl phosphatidylinositol. It is a member of a larger family of glypicans. Glypican-4 has been isolated originally as K-glypican (Watanabe et al, 1995), so named because of its high expression in tubular epithelial cells in the kidney and proliferating neuroepithelial cells in the brain.
Hagihara et al (2000) have reported that glypican-4 regulates the action of aFGF on neural precursor cells and suppresses the mitogenic effect of aFGF in cortical precursor cells.
