Glypican-1 is a cell surface heparan sulfate proteoglycan with a core protein that is anchored to the cytoplasmic membrane via a glycosyl phosphatidylinositol. It is a member of a larger family of glypicans. Chen and Lander (2001) have shown that a particular globular domain of the core protein plays an important role in the assembly of heparan sulfate on glypican-1 and ensures a high level of heparan sulfate substitution.
Rat glypican-1 (identified independently as M12) and human glypican-1 show 89 % sequence identity (Karthikeyan et al, 1992)
