glycoprotein L

abbr. gL. This protein is encoded by the UL1 gene of HSV-1 and is found also in other herpes viruses. glycoprotein L forms complexes with glycoprotein H, which is known to be essential for virus entry into cells (Hutchinson et al, 1992).

Wyrwicz and Rychlewski (2007) have reported that glycoprotein L is distantly related to chemokine receptor ligands and forms a chemokine-like protein. Alpha-herpesvirinae glycoprotein L as well as CMV functional homolog (UL130) create a novel CX-Chemokine-like protein, while Gamma-herpesvirinae glycoprotein L (HHV8 and EBV) adopt a regular CC beta-Chemokine fold. glycoprotein L thus may interact with specific cellular chemokine receptors during the invasion of Herpesviridae.
