(pit cells, as opposed to liver pit cells) These cells are epithelial cells found in the gastric epithelium in the central (corpus) region of the stomach. They are positioned in tubular mucosal invaginations known as gastric units. Gastric pit cells represent one of five lineages of epithelial cells in the stomach (chief cells, parietal cells, enteroendocrine cells, caveolated cells) (Karam and Leblond, 1992).
