also: fork neurons. fork cell are specialized neurons with some morphological features related to those of von Economo neurons, having a single large basal dendrite but 2 large, divergent apical dendrites. These neurons have been described by Ramón y Cajal (1900), von Economo and Koskinas (1925) and De Crinis (1933). Ngowyang (1932) who referred to these cells as Gabelzellen (German for fork cells) has reported a particular abundance in the frontoinsula region of the brain. von Economo neurons and morphotypes resembling fork cells also appear to coexist in Ammon's horn (De Crinis, 1933; Ngowyang 1936).
