abbr. FGP cells. These cells are known also as Mato cells (Mato et al, 1986), Mato's FGP cells, perivascular macrophages, cerebral perivascular macrophages, perivascular microglia, or perivascular cells (Williams et al, 2001). The cells, which are characterized by the presence of fluorescent granules, are in close contact with cerebral blood vessels (in the Virchow-Robin space of cerebral microvessels) (Mato and Ookawara, 1981; Ookawara et al, 1996).
