[fasciacyte]
this term has been coined to refer to a specialised cell type found in layers of fibrous connective tissue (fasciae) that surrounds muscles, groups of muscles, blood vessels, and nerves and permit smooth gliding movements of tissue surfaces. The cells have some features similar to fibroblasts; they express the fibroblast marker vimentin and are negative for CD68. Their morphological features are distinct from classical fibroblasts and the cells express the marker for chondroid metaplasia, S100A4. The cells are specialized for the biosynthesis of a matrix rich in hyaluronan, which is important for viscoelasticity and gliding movement (Stecco C et al, 2018).
