The terms facilitator cells, probe cells, and dervish cells have been coined by Scherer et al (2015) in a computer-assisted analysis of the aggregation behaviour of tumorigenic cells in Matrigel cultures. Cells with this specialized behaviour are found in established cell lines and fresh tumor tissue and are not present in non-tumorigenic lines.
Facilitator cells are multinucleated, multi-processed large cells protruding from cell aggregates and appear to be functionally specialized. Probe cells are cells protruding from a large aggregate surface and then retract in an apparently random fashion. and may simply represent cells
