[extinction neuron]
this cell type constitutes a population of neurons found in the basal nucleus of the amygdala (Herry et al, 2006). Extinction neurons are defined functionally as a class of neurons that are linked with the medial prefrontal cortex and involved in fear extinction. These neurons cooperate with another class of neurons known as fear neurons. Stimulation of fear neurons increases fear, whereas stimulation of extinction neurons suppresses fear and prevents spontaneous recovery (see: Lacagnina et al, 2019; see also: Carrere and Alexandre, 2015; Li et al, 2016; Bennett et al, 2017; for overview see also: Amano et al, 2011; Li et al, 2011).
