This general term refers to a form of cell death occurring in neurons in response to excitatory amino acids that are capable to alter calcium homeostasis (see also: calcium-mediated cell death). Excitotoxicity has substantial cellular specificity and is mediated, in most cases, by glutamate. In neurons, calcium ions can gain entry into the cell through the over-activation of glutamate receptors or of a range of channels and transporters.
