This cell type (see also: erythroid cells), referred to also as CD71(+) erythroid cells, represents a population of erythroid precursor cells coexpressing the transferrin receptor CD71 and erythroid marker TER-119 (Elahi S et al, 2013). The cells possess immunosuppressive properties and are physiologically enriched in neonatal mice and human cord blood. Neonatal erythroid suppressor cells have been shown to express the enzyme arginase-2, and arginase activity is essential for the immunosuppressive properties.
