[enterokines]
This collective term has been used to refer to cytokines, growth factors, hormones, and proteins or peptides secreted by the gut. In a wider sense, this includes the gastrointestinal tract. The term may be used also for any factor that acts on cells within the gastrointestinal tract rather than being secreted by these cells.
The derivation of this term is similar to that of adipokines (secreted by, or acting on, adipocytes) or gastrokine (secreted by, or acting on, stomach cells). Use of the term enterokine does not imply that such factors are secreted exclusively by cell types in the gastrointestinal tract.
