Enteroendocrine cells in the gastrointestinal tract that are defined by their ability to synthesize the incretin hormone glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (called also GIP, gastric inhibitory peptide), a 42 amino acid peptide hormone involved in hormone homeostasis (Fehmann et al, 1995; Ferri et al, 1983; Ramshur et al, 2002; Yeung et al, 1999).
