Also: T-effector cells (abbr. Teff cells). This term is used frequently for populations of T-cells with cytolytic activities and for T-helper cells, which secrete cytokines and activate and direct other immune cells, to distinguish them from another class of T-cells known as regulatory T-cells.

Two main subsets of the pool of early effector T-cells are usually distinguished according to their ability to form terminally differentiated effector cells or long-lived memory cells (Kaech et al, 2003; Sallusto et al, 1999).
