[disease-associated microglial cell, disease-associated microglial cells]
abbr. DAMs. This term refers to a distinct type of macroglial cells described by Keren-Shaul (2017) who used single cell transcriptome analysis to identify immune cell populations in wild-type and Alzheimer's Disease-transgenic mouse brain. Although the exact relationship is not clear, for comparison see also: Dark microglia, Human Alzheimer’s microglia (abbr. HAMs), Plaque-associated microglia (abbr. PAMs).
Disease-associated microglia differ from conventional pro-inflammatory M1-activated microglia obtained by classical activation and immunosuppressive M2-activated microglia
