abbr. DIRCs. This cell type in mouse skin has been described by Schatton et al (2015). The cells appear to constitute a distinct cell population of immunoregulatory cells and are defined by the expression of ATP-binding cassette member B5 (ABCB5), which allows their purification. The cells have been shown to express PD-1 [programmed death-1] (see: PDCD1 [programmed cell death-1]). The cells have features of immunoregulatory mesenchymal stem cells in other tissues and preferentially co-express the mesenchymal stem cell markers CD29, CD44, CD49e, CD73,
