also: death fold, or death fold domain (abbr. DFD) (Vaughn et al, 1999). An arrangement of six anti-parallel helices forming a compact bundle and assuming Greek key topology surrounding an extensive hydrophobic core. This folding domain is found in a variety of proteins (see also: death domain superfamily) that participate in cell death by apoptosis or signaling pathways that involve the activation of caspase-1 and transcription factor NF-kappa-B.
