a kind of cell degeneration or cell death characterized morphologically by the extensive fragmentation of cytoplasm rather than the nucleus (karyorrhexis). Cytorrhexis is thought to describe accidental cell death rather than a form of programmed cell death.
Cytorrhexis has been observed during necrosis of neurons resulting from excitotoxicity (Streit, 2004). Fendrick et al (2007) have used the term to describe degeneration of microglial cells, which likely reflects terminal degeneration of these cells. Cytorrhexis is infrequent in the normally aged human brain and non-detectable in aged rodents, but increases dramatically during neurodegenerative conditions, including Alzheimer's disease in
