[cytochrome cell]
This term has been used by classical cytologists and essentially refers to the morphology and histological staining behaviour of neurons. The term was suggested by Nissl (1895), who used a specific aniline-based basic stain for revealing neurons and glial cells in brain sections. Cytochrome cells react only with their nuclei to the Nissl stain and have an unstained cell body. Examples of such cells are the granule cells found in the molecular layer of the cerebellum. The nuclei of these cells are no larger than those of neuroglial cell. See also: somatochrome cells.
