abbr. CySCs. This cell type is one of two types of stem cells found in Drosophila testis. Somatic cyst stem cells divide to give rise to post-mitotic cyst cells that envelop and support the development of germ cell cysts (see also: ovarian cystocytes) (Zoller and Schulz, 2012). Germline self-renewal has been reported to require cyst stem cells or their derivatives (Leatherman and Dinardo, 2010; Lim and Fuller, 2012), and BMP produced by cyst stem cells is required for maintenance of germline stem cells (de Cuevas and Matunis, 2011).
