abbr. CMMCs. This term does not refer to a defined cell type but to a heterogeneous population of cells emerging from peripheral blood mononuclear cells under defined culture conditions. These culture conditions are chosen in such a way that the cell culture will include a subpopulation of cells with the capacity to develop into mature endothelial cells and thus behave as endothelial progenitor cells (see: angioblasts; see also: endothelial lineage cells)).
