These cells are one type of specialized olfactory sensory neurons peculiar to fish (apart from two large populations of ciliated and microvillous neurons and Kappe neurons) found in teleost and cartilaginous fish (Hamdani and Doving, 2007.
Crypt neurons target to a single glomerulus within the olfactory bulb, mdg2 of the mediodorsal cluster (Ahuja et al, 2013). The cells display trkA like immunoreactivity and may respond to NT-6 [neurotrophin-6] and NT-7 [neurotrophin-7] (Catania et al, 2003).
