abbr. also CBC cells or BCC cells. These cells are found at the base of intestinal crypts. Cheng and Leblond (1974) have identified these cells in mammalian intestine as small cycling epithelial cells interspersed between the Paneth cells. Clonal marking techniques have identified these cells as long-lived cells (Bjerknes and Cheng, 1999). The cells are located within the stem cell zone of the crypt base and may represent the actual intestinal epithelial stem cells that give tise to intestinal columnar cells, intestinal goblet cells,
