Copper cells have been described as a subset of cells in the Drosophila melanogaster midgut epithelium (Filshie et al, 1971). This cell type corresponds to so-called calycocytes described earlier as acid-secreting cells in the larvae of the moth Deilephila (Strasburger, 1932; Deegener, 1928). The large calycocytes in Drosophila are the copper-accumulating ceils (Poulson and Bowen, 1952). In some insect species the cells are being referred to as cuprophilic cells or copper-accumulating cells (Waterhouse and Stay, 1955).
