This protein is an outer surface and putative virulence factor of Borrelia hermsii, a bacterium that causes recurrent bacteremia due to antigenic variation. Colombo and Alugupalli (2008) have shown that this binding protein for factor H is expressed by all clinical isolates and does not undergo antigenic variation. During infection, a progressive increase in the IgM response to the binding protein correlates with a selective expansion of B-1b cells, diminishes the severity of bacteremic episodes, and leads to the eventual resolution of the infection.
