The concept of command neurons goes back to early observations that a single action potential in any of the four giant fibers that run along the dorsal margin of the crayfish nerve cord cause the crayfish to execute a tail-flip escape response (Wiersma, 1947). This term is an operational definition of single neurons or small sets of neurons that are both necessary and sufficient for the initiation of a specific, naturally occurring behaviour (Kupfermann and Weiss, 1978; for overview and discussions of the modifications of the original concept see: Davis and Kovac, 1981; Edwards DH et al, 1999).
In some terrestrial snail species the term has been used to refer to giant interneurons
