[clastokine]
This term has been used to refer to mediators, including cytokines or growth factors, that are secreted by osteoclasts and regulate the bioactivities of neighbouring cells, reflecting the observations that osteoclasts also have roles in bone that go beyond bone resorption (Boyce et al, 2009).
The term Osteoclastokines (Krzeszinski JY et al, 2017), which suggests cytokines secreted by osteoclasts, has been used to refer to lipid mediators such as arachidonic acid (prometastatic) and lysophosphatidylcholines (antimetastatic) produced by osteoclasts to stimulate tumor cell proliferation, migration, survival, and expression of prometastatic genes.
