[chromophobe cell, chromophobic cells, chromophobic cell]
a histological term referring to sparsely granulated cells that have no affinity to the usual histological dyes (e. g., eosin and hematoxylin), i.e., they have too few structures to be identified either as acidophilic cells or basophilic cells (see also: chromophil cells). Such cells are found, for example, in the anterior pituitary. The function of these cells is unknown.
Most chromophobe cells in the pituitary have been shown to contain small granules with a variety staining characteristics.
