This more general term refers to cell death occurring after a cell has been internalised by another cell (for overview see: Wang and Wang, 2015; Jenkins et al, 2017). This is primarily an operational or descriptive definition and does not specify the underlying mechanism leading to the death of the engulfed cell. Cell-in-cell death may be executed by either lysosome-dependent degradation (entotic cell-in-cell death; see: Entosis) or classical apoptosis (apoptotic cell-in-cell death) involving the activation of caspases. Cell-in-cell death is also an example of non-cell-autonomous death as it involves the participation of two cells in the cell death process.
