Carpet cells or carpet glial cells are very large specialized glial cells found in the Drosophila melanogaster eye (Silies et al, 2007). These cells cover one half of the differentiated part of the eye disc, which corresponds to an area of approximately 10,000 epithelial cells. Carpet cells belong to the subperineurial glia that establishes the blood-brain barrier (BBB) in insects (Carlson et al, 2000).
Carpet cells provide a physical barrier between two different glial cells types populating the eye disc, the wrapping glial cells that ensheath the axons, and non-wrapping (migration-competent) glial cells. In the developing visual system of Drosophila
