This cell type is found within the carotid bodies, small ovoid masses of tissue located bilaterally in the neck, at the rostral end of the left and right common carotid arteries where these bifurcate into pairs of internal and external carotid arteries (for overview see: Pallot, 1987). The major cells in this neuroendocrine organ, which receives the highest blood flow per tissue weight of any organ in the body (De Burgh Daly et al, 1954; Clarke et al, 1986; Barnett et al, 1988), have been referred to as glomic cells, glomic type 1 cells, type 1 glomic cells, type 1 glomus cells, carotid body type 1 cells, carotid body type 1 glomus cells,
