This collective term refers to the heterogeneous population of non-muscular cells that populate the space found between cardiomyocyte fibers in the heart. It includes different cardiac progenitor/stem cells, cardiac fibroblasts and other cell types. Reported sources for these cells include bone marrow-derived circulating cells, perivascular cells, the endothelium/endocardium, and the epicardium. Krenning et al, 2010; Zeisberg and Kalluri, 2010; Torella et al, 2005).
