Called also: burr erythrocytes, echinocytes, echinocytic erythrocytes, crenated erythrocytes (crenocytes). Sometimes, these cells are being referred to also as prickle cells.
Burr cells are a distinct shape variant of normal erythrocytes characterized by the presence of multiple evenly spaced cell surface projections with serrated edges that cover the entire surface (Smith and Khakoo, 1970). These cells may be confused with another aberrant erythrocyte shape form with cell surface projections, so-called acanthocytes
