abbr. BNSP (a term with multiple meanings). This biochemically uncharacterized protein of approximately 15 kDa has been purified from bovine brain tissue. It stimulates neurite outgrowth in organotypic cultures of chicken embryo spinal ganglia (Goncharova et al, 1987). In an organotypic culture of dorsal root ganglia of 10-11 day-old chick embryos, BNSP promotes the development of branching mechanosensory endings (Akoev et al, 1989, 1992). This activity has been isolated also from rat brain (Goncharova et al, 1989). Chumasov et al (1989) have reported that the protein increases the mitotic activity of glial cells.
