[blister cell]
The term describes a specific shape form of erythrocytes that deviates from the standard form (see also: discocytes). These cells are thought to be precursors of helmet cells. The hemoglobin is concentrated on one side of the cell while the other, resembling a blister, is colourless. These cells are seen in the blood of patients with sickle cell anemia, pulmonary infarctation and hepatic disease but are not diagnostic.
For other aberrant shape forms of erythrocytes see also: poikilocytes.
