abbr. BLSCs. This very small cell type has been described by Stout et al (2007) who isolated them from skeletal muscle and blood samples from pigs, using the cell surface marker CD66e. The cells are thought to possess primitive stem cell characteristics and are released from muscle into the blood following trauma. These cells may represent a population of so-called small stem cells but have not been tested for the presence or absence of lineage markers and stem cell markers.
