[atypical endometrial cell of undetermined significance]
abbr. ATEC-US; also atypical endometrial cells (abbr. ATECs). This term is used by histologists for small rounded cells which occur in balls and moulded groups with pale chromatin, conspicuous nucleoli and vacuolar, basophilic cytoplasm that may be observed in cervical smear specimens (DeMay, 2012). The term reflects diagnostic uncertainty. The presence of such atypical cells in histological speciments warrants a more detailed analysis as it indicates hyperplasia of endometrial cells and the risk of co-existent endometrial cancer (Trimble et al, 2006; Merisio et al, 2005; Widra et al, 1995; Costales et al, 2014; Bilgin et al, 2004; Morotti et al, 2012; Munakata et al, 2017).
