[atypical cell of undetermined significance]
abbr. ACUS. This term, which pertains in particular to thyroid neoplasms, is used by histologists/pathologists for atypical cells in fine-needle aspirates that cannot be classified easily as benign, suspicious, or malignant and thus signals diagnostic uncertainty that requires follow-up and further tests, if available (Faquin, 2009; Krane et al, 2009; Kurian et al, 2012).
