A name coined by Susanto et al (2013) to describe a morphological manifestation of cell death that differs from classic apoptosis. Mouse target cells exposed to primary NK-cells show a pronounced, writhing, 'worm-like' morphology. Dying cells initially contract but do not undergo membrane blebbing, and annexin-5 staining is delayed until the onset of secondary necrosis.
This alternate form of death appears to be due to Granzyme A and is reproduced when recombinant mouse Granzyme A is delivered by an otherwise innocuous dose of recombinant Perforin. Athetosis mediated by Granzyme A
