[arrest chemokine]
The term arrest chemokines (Ley, 2003) refers to a subset of immobilized chemokines expressed by endothelial cells under physiologic or pathologic conditions. These factors rapidly activate leukocyte integrin adhesiveness under shear flow. Such chemokines bind their cognate receptors on rolling cells and initiate leukocyte attachment to endothelial cells in a process that eventually leads to firm adhesion by integrin activation and/or redistribution and that is a prerequisite for transmigration of these cells into underlying tissues. In the absence of integrin ligands, these chemokines destabilize leukocyte rolling.
