Apotopes are simply defined as epitopes expressed on the surface of apoptotic cells or apoptotic bodies (Reed et al, 2008, 2008).
Their expression may have pathological consequences. This has been demonstrated, for example, in the case of primary biliary cirrhosis where small biliary epithelial cells may express the immunodominant mitochondrial autoantigen PDC-E2 (E2 component of the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex), which is a ubiquitous protein present in mitochondria of nucleated cells. Small biliary epithelial cells translocate immunologically intact PDC-E2 to apoptotic bodies formed during apoptosis (Lleo et al, 2009).
