[anti-lipopolysaccharide factors] abbr. ALF, also in acronyms and compound terms. Generically these factors are often being referred to as SALF [Shrimp anti-lipopolysaccharide factor].
These factors have been identified in a variety of crab and lobster species and are thought to play a role in innate immune defense.
These factors principally act by binding LPS and removing it from the circulation. They can diminish the biological effects of endotoxin on a variety of cells types, acting, among other things, as inhibitors of cytokine induction. They may be protective against lethal shock provoked by endotoxin
